During a high-profile livestream on July 17, Sam Altman and his engineering team introduced the “agent mode” for ChatGPT.
This new feature allows the AI to plan events, manage presentations, and control email/calendar apps, provided the user consents to each task. The rollout has begun for Pro, Plus, and Team subscribers, and is guided by project lead Yash Kumar.
As with any cutting-edge technology, OpenAI cautions that the feature remains experimental, with both bugs and security risks still being monitored.

3. Redefining Intelligence: What is an “AI Agent”?

OpenAI’s COO, Brad Lightcap, recently defined an “AI agent” as a system that can face tasks it’s never seen before, using logic and autonomy rather than pre-programmed responses.
This marks a fundamental shift: instead of waiting for users to prompt them, agents will increasingly anticipate and manage digital workflows, potentially transforming productivity, automation, and even creative work across industries.

4. Europe’s Regulatory Push: AI Under the Spotlight

On the policy front, the European Union is tightening regulation on AI, with the introduction of the AI Act and new codes of conduct.
This week, Meta (Facebook’s parent company) made headlines by refusing to sign the EU’s largest AI law, calling the guidelines too vague and restrictive.
The EU, meanwhile, continues to demand more transparency and security, warning that non-compliance may result in significant fines.
